Tutors and cheetahs.

So what the heck do those two things have in common? Well, since you asked (no you didn't), I'll tell you.

For those who don't know, I'm currently dating a Canadian, referred to as 'B' on my blog. Actually 'dating' is underselling it; we live together and we're bonded. We share two dogs and wonderful memories. We love each other.

Well I love him and I hope that he loves me.

So what does this have to do with tutors and cheetahs?

Nothing at all, I'm just going off on a B-tra-la-la tangent again.

But I do love the fact that he's Canadian, it's part of the appeal. Call me irresponsible, but I find it a little exotic to date someone from another country, who has his own set of food names and pop culture references.

Of course there are some things we disagree on, like whether it's 'math' class, as said in North America, or 'maths', as we say in Australia.

When we were disputing it, B said, "Well if it's 'maths', then why don't you call 'English', 'Englishes?'"

Well yes, B, you've got me there.

Anyhoo, aside from the word debates, there is, of course, an accent difference. That too is part of the appeal. But occasionally things get a wee bit lost in translation because of it.

Like the time I was telling him about a person in Hong Kong who tutors students for a living.

When Australians say 'tutor', we pronounce it like this: 'tyooduh.'

So I was telling B all about this tutor (or tyooduh) and he was listening attentively to the whole story, nodding, uh-hah-ing, politely smiling, but he had started to develop a frown by the end.

I said to him, "What's wrong?"

B replied, "Well I totally get the whole story, except one thing... why was there a cheetah in with the students? I mean, how was that allowed??"

I said, "Huh?? I never said there was a cheetah there!"

And he answered, "You've just spent the last ten minutes talking to me about this cheetah in Hong Kong, working with the students!"

Cheetah.

Tyooduh.

Yup. Lost in translation.

Happy Valentine's Day

I will be spending today at the top of a lovely hotel indulging in a champagne brunch with B and our two closest friends in Hong Kong.

I hope you enjoy today with your loved ones; whether it be husband, wife, mother, father, sister, brother, friend - of of course - yourself. I've spent many a Valentine's Day with my divine sister, and also alone, with a giant popcorn and a great movie. The perfect day. Comedy of course - not romance :)

Also - Kung Hei Fat Choy, or Happy Chinese New Year!

May the Year of the Tiger bring you love, peace, contentment - and plenty of 'pinch me' moments.

Comfort food...

I had to post about my lunch today, because I NEVER get to eat this sort of food in Hong Kong.

We took B's Canadian family to Bubba Gump Shrimp for something that didn't include noodles, rice or pork.

I never knew this place existed!

I had fried shrimp, a BBQ cheeseburger with fries, and a soft chop chip cookie with vanilla ice cream for dessert that came on a plate as big as my burger.

I am SO sick of noodles, rice and pork.

And I am so very, very full.

New You Tube video is up!

p.s B's mum (mom), sister, and two nieces are here... it's been bliss to have family around again. It's soothing. Warm.

B is Canadian and hasn't seen his mum in over a year. It's a pleasure to see them enjoy some time together. When family lives in a distant land, each and every moment is treasured, heightened.

Today we walked around the shopping hub of Causeway Bay, and then had famous Hong Kong foot massages.

If only every week could be like this! Life is an absolute delight sometimes.

I took this photo the last time I was in Canada, in the mountains of Vancouver. Such a gorgeous country with wonderful people.

Oh and grizzly bears. I don't like those.

My Christmas Angel

He's so much fun to have around. Every day is spent with my best friend! Who's also rather dreamy.

I bought him a HD DVD series for Christmas, and it's not working in our machine :(.

As I'm writing this he's scratching his disappointed head and Googling it. I don't think Google can help with this one. Poor thing.

10 things I love about B...

These are not the only 10, just 10 things I am thinking about today... and they are in no particular order -

1. He is a truly gifted cook (who never uses a cookbook)... I don't even bother entering the kitchen most of the time
2. He's funny - always thinking of a joke to say or do, and they are (usually) funny
3. He has cute highlights in his hair, they suit him
4. He is deeply kind and gentle, he thinks of everyone else first, and I trust him with my life
5. He doesn't snore (very often)
6. I never get tired of staying up past my bedtime just talking to him
7. He never cares what people think and does his own thing
8. He tells the most fantastic stories
9. He is boyishly handsome
10. He leaves me little love notes every morning

He's utterly smotherable!

The man I love....

N.B. He is now a fully grown adult, I assure you!

You can always tell a man by how much he loves his dog.

What I wake up to...

So I've been sick this week, and boyfriend-B's been leaving cute messages on our fridge. He leaves crazy-early and does this a lot.

He's a bit romantic like that.

In Sydney, it used to be little notes and flowers on my car each morning. One morning there was a $10 bill folded into a little note that said "coffee is on me today gorgeous". $10 for a coffee?? He moves in different circles to me, but it was adorable nonetheless.

Now that we don't have cars, (or garages, or houses) he's been writing on our fridge. Here's the one from this morning - I love the sprinkle of sunshine!

In other breaking news, Hong Kong is looking magnificent today, so I'm perking up for a flu-free weekend... yay! B is getting his hair done tomorrow (he turns into a princess once in a blue moon) so I'm going in search of a great mountain hike on to escape the smog and stench of noodles.

Actually... I might head off to get some yummy wonton noodles for lunch! Controversial, I know.

An (unexpectedly) brilliant holiday in paradise

Wrong again!

B and I decided to jet off for this small slice of bliss, purely because such whimsical decisions are possible now that we live in Asia. In Australia, a trip to Thailand is often a much larger production, requiring a longish flight, a week off, a spray tan, etc.

A last-minute decision also meant we had to book a hotel at the eleventh hour, and scored a huge tropical suite for a fraction of the price (planning is overrated!)

There were other highlights - I miraculously didn't fall ill (a common occurrence when I travel - however I always seem to be the last one to get sick at home - weird), B was in top form (he surprised me with champagne on arrival and all sorts of romantic embellishments) and - best of all - I discovered if you have so little time to enjoy a place, you tend to appreciate everything more.

My ten Thailand experiences (in 4 days or less!):

- The most amazing hotel suite I have ever stayed in... for a laughable cost
- Special mentions: Our outdoor rain shower and huge patio
- Our two resident frogs who kept watch for crazy tourists outside our suite
- The tastiest Pina Coladas I've ever had (thanks bargirl!)
- Getting massaged for next to nothing on the beach
- (Of course) The food!
- B's thoughtful romantic gestures (Swoon. Stop. And swoon again)
- Feeling inspired to get up early and watch the sun come up
- Crystal clear, warm, ocean water
- Being only 3 hours from home! (by one of those really fast flying things)

I hope you had a great weekend!
