Road trip

Recovery from Vegas. Long roads, beautiful mountains, and please no bears (my biggest fear).

Where my step-dad is from; a place to rest and clink champagne glasses for B's birthday inside a Telluride mountain lodge. I can already smell the fresh air.

Historic homes to Native American history (a culture I've long been fascinated with) and the playing fields of old wild western movies. A truly special place I'm told.

Have a fantastic two weeks; I'll try to not neglect my blog. But if I do - it only means I'm having far too much fun. Or I have been eaten by a bear. Or I am hiding in shame after getting married in Vegas.

Celebrity crushes. Oh my.

Mid-week confession: I have a crush on Penn Badgley. You know, that guy from Gossip Girl. I wish I could give you a mature and noble reason but it's purely and simply because he's majorly hawt.

Am I the only over-30-year-old who still gets schoolgirl-crushy over cute celebs from time to time?

Really... I'm asking, because I have some concerns that this is entirely childish behaviour that surely I would have moved on from say, fifteen years ago?

But there is something shamefully exciting about having a minor (and entirely innocent) crush on someone as unattainable as a celebrity. Not that I would ever want to attain one even if I could attain, as I am very happily attained to another right about now.

But, attaining aside, it's still fun to swallow a few gazillion butterflies when you gaze upon your Edward Cullen or Jude Law or Paul Giamatti or whomever floats your boat. It kinda breaks up the day.
So - just for pure and utter fun - here is a list of my past celebrity loves. Oh and I am brutal... When I fall I I fall hard and then, when I find another, wild horses couldn't drag me away fast enough. So I don't like to commit.

My first crush: Rick Astley

I was eight years old when young Rick was 80s dancing on Rage to 'Never Gonna Give You Up.' I didn't know what a crush was and thought I just liked the song until I saw an interview where he said he had a "very pretty girlfriend." I wasn't sure why I felt an incredible urge to slap her.

Although I do look at him now and wonder if I was perhaps on crack.

My second and most major crush: Bruce Willis

I saw the original Die Hard when I was ten years old and became entranced by the character of John McLean. I felt sorry for all the pain he had gone through and wanted to hug him.

I must have watched the movie twelve million times and once burst into tears in front of my mother because she wouldn't help me marry Bruce Willis. I mean, really... we call this parenting?

Early 90s crush: Donnie Whalberg

If you were a teenage girl in the 90s, you simply had to pick a New Kid on the Block to sticky-tape all over your wall or you were drifting into serious social outcast territory.

I noticed all the girls were picking Joey. So I picked Donnie. Plus he did that cool finger-pointing thing.

First TV star obsession: Jason Priestley

Could this man be any more good looking? Even with enough product in his hair to oil all the woks in China?

Jason was the star of the biggest teen soap that existed during my most crush-sensitive years, Beverly Hills 90210. I can still sing the opening theme where he turns and smiles to the camera. Duh-na... duh na na na naaaa na...

Vampire lust: David Boreanaz

David arrived on the scene looong before the days of Edward Cullen, ok?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my favourite TV show of all time and 'Angel' was the tall, dark and brooding vampire in leather pants. Let's not act like I actually had a choice in this one.

Unoriginal crush: Colin Firth

Most women have suffered at the hands of a Mr Darcy obsession so I need not go on.

I will add that I did interview Colin Firth through my job once and he was admittedly disappointing in person. I was relieved - I didn't know how I was going to plot to make him ask me out on a date.

WTF crush: The Phantom of the Opera

I am seemingly not immune to an entirely weird choice of crush. I always had a soft spot for the tortured Phantom and thought Raoul was a bit of a douche.

I love a bit of darkness in my man and as soon as Gerard Butler donned the white face mask for the movie version he was inside my mind alright.

Current crush: Penn Badgley.

Need I explain?

He's cute, witty, smart and a good actor. This is the ultimate combination.
Oh and he's dating his co-star in real life. He gets extra props for that.

Who are your past fantasy loves???

10 minutes with B.

For those of you who don't know, I am currently dating Mr Wonderful.

If you live together, share two dogs and a happy life, is it still called dating?

Anyhoo, he is not THE Mr Wonderful - as we all know there isn't just one - there are (mercifully) many, hopefully enough for everyone.

I am dating my Mr Wonderful - and you can read a bit about him here and here.

B regularly cameos in my blog posts (even ones totally unrelated to him) as a direct example of how much he takes over my thoughts... one minute I'm googling how to grow asparagus and the next minute I'm thinking... "B makes such great asparagus."

You get the idea.

So, the objective journalist in me has recognised the necessity to give the man "right of reply"; a chance to speak his own words on my own blog, after so many posts about him written by me.

Therefore I managed to convince the ever-private B to do a mini interview. Here goes:

How are you enjoying living in Hong Kong?

What do you love most in life?

Its unpredictability. You never know what's waiting around the corner.

What is your biggest regret?

Not playing more ice hockey when I was a kid. My whole family played it and I wish I had done the same thing and become better at it.

What would you most like to achieve that you still haven't?

To do something to help the planet or benefit mankind. It sounds cliche but that's the honest truth.

What is one habit you wish you could change?

Playing with my hair.

What do you love most about me?

You have a big heart and a fiery spirit. And you have the most beautiful, unique-coloured eyes.

What are you most proud of?

What will you never understand about women?

When they ask questions like, "do you like this dress or this dress?' and I say, "I like this one", and they reply "but I like this one!" (Being asked for my opinion when they have already decided what they want anyway).

When did you last cry?

Last night watching a true story movie about a mountain climber who survived against all odds. It just shows that people should never give up, no matter what.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Massages. Nat gives me HEAPS...... not :).

What makes you smile?

The honesty of children. They're very perceptive.

If you could have dinner with any one person, living or dead, who would it be?

Can I cheat and say both my grandfathers who have passed away? I'd love to get to know them better and meet them as an adult. I honestly can't understand why so many people are dying to meet movie stars, taking for granted that some of the most interesting and influential people are those that are already around you.

Can I keep him?

My second home.

The title of this post is actually a bit misleading, because the country of Italy might actually be my first home. My nest supreme.
In my heart at least. And we all know that's where home truly lives.

In the past I've tried to unravel the mystery of why I've fallen so deeply in love with Italy, because it goes far beyond its beauty and irresistible charm. "Italianophiles" (people obsessed with all things Italy) live all over the world, so I know I'm not alone in this entirely unoriginal affair. I can't lay claim to Italy, I need to share it with others like me.

Oh yeah and around 60 million Italians.

Italy and I began dating back when I was a child, when my father asked me which team I was supporting in the football World Cup. I don't know why I blurted out "Italy!" - I'd never seen it, barely heard of it, and was far too young to choose based on the players' pretty faces. Oh but they are pretty.

But, for some reason I shall never be told, that day I chose Italy and it chose me - and it started to take over my thoughts. My ears pricked up at the mere mention of Italy in conversations and I had dreams about it. I lived through my teenage years green with envy whenever anyone mentioned they'd been there on holiday. I knew we were destined to meet, I just didn't know when.

It didn't happen until I was in my mid-twenties. My dad invited me on a European holiday and, after beginning with a fantastic week in Paris, I actually felt sad to leave it and (traitor alert!) almost disappointed to be moving on to Italy.

That harlot Paris had momentarily stolen my heart away from my Italians. How dare she.

But train tickets and accommodation were booked and I had no choice but to come face-to-face with my destiny.

After spending the entire train trip childishly depressed over losing Paris, our train pulled up in Rome. I stepped onto the platform into a swarm of bustling, hurried, pushing Italians carrying coffee and cornetto (pastries). The trains were all delayed, people were shouting, a leery man literally wouldn't leave me alone and asked if he could come with us to Venice, and I was surrounded by total and utter chaos.

Oh boy, I thought. I think this is relationship is going to be serious.

It was too much love. At first sight.

Three weeks spent in Rome, Venice, Florence, Perugia, Naples and the Amalfi Coast; I fell for it all.

The lack of care factor for any kind of organisation.
The cacophonous, emotional voices that danced between huge arguments and swarms of kisses.
The expressive, talkative hands that waved all over the place.
The three-hour daily lunch break where I couldn't buy anything because all the shops were closed.
The presumptuous men who literally chased me down the street.
The sleepy, rustic countryside that smiled warmly.
The deliriously happy food that lives only to be eaten.
The jaw-dropping historical sights (the Pantheon has to be seen to be believed).
The sentimental Italian songs sung in piazzas by grown men in tears.
The bottomless bottles of wine.

I was utterly, truly, madly, tragically and deeply enamoured - and there would never be any way back.

Oh and best of all - last time I went I got to bring this spunk.

Australians are not buffoons

The "Wonton Wallaby" B&S ball?

Oh, and -

I know we like a bit of good ol' country tradition down under, but this just makes us sound like we've all had a bit too much VB in the sun.

So to my Hong Kong friends - I apologise for the jelly wrestling and bikini requirement. Ladies - I'm sure you are free to dress however you wish for the B&S ball and clothes are more than fine. Me? I'd rather inject VB into my eyeballs than attend this BS.

Ok rant over.
