Australians are not buffoons

Or are we?

I received an email in my inbox this week - a media release announcing the Australian "B&S Ball" (a singles event whose name stands for bachelors and spinsters) that is, for some reason, being held in Hong Kong this year. Have a read:

The B&S Ball of 2010 - “Bringing the Australian Outback to Hong Kong!”

Taking the BS out of dating, The Wonton Wallaby B&S Ball (that stands for Bachelor and Spinster) is set to be the singles, social gathering of the year. This typical Australian concept of bringing footloose and fancy free people together will be recreated in an outback setting at the Indian Recreation Club, opposite the Hong Kong Stadium, in Causeway Bay on Friday 29th October 2010.

Flying in especially to entertain guests is Australia’s favourite party band, The Nevilles. Having established a name for itself on Channel 9’s “The Footy Show”, the Nevilles will get people up and dancing to old and new hits. While the band takes a breather, DJ Mayhem will hit the decks to keep the party rocking.

If that wasn’t enough, the B&S Ball will be home to arguably Hong Kong’s first Jelly Wrestling tournament. Ladies don’t forget to come prepared – pack your bikini – as volunteers will have the chance to lube up and wrestle for a top prize and trophy.

Presented by National Australia Bank and Calibre Asset Management, tickets to the B&S Ball cost HK$1200 (HK$950 if you book before the 17th September) and include a five hour drinks package and BBQ food. Shuttle buses will then transport you for free to Coast in SoHo for the After Party.

Dress code is Australian Black Tie. Baffled by this, don’t be. Basically you can wear what you like from a posh frock to shorts and Rugby shirt. You don’t have to be Australian to enjoy this evening of fun and frolics, all you need to do is buy your ticket at HK Ticketing.

Where do I sign up to get lubed up in my bikini and wrestle other lubees in front of a bunch of drooling blokes??

I know we like a bit of good ol' country tradition down under, but this just makes us sound like we've all had a bit too much VB in the sun.

So to my Hong Kong friends - I apologise for the jelly wrestling and bikini requirement. Ladies - I'm sure you are free to dress however you wish for the B&S ball and clothes are more than fine. Me? I'd rather inject VB into my eyeballs than attend this BS.
